WASHINGTON - The U.S. will ban the use of WeChat as of Sunday to "protect the national security" of the country.

Downloading of the Chinese TikTok application will also be banned at the same time, and use of the platform will be banned by November 12, but Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Friday morning on Fox Business News that access to the application would be possible if certain protections are in place.

"Under the President's leadership, we have taken important steps to combat China's malicious collection of personal data of U.S. citizens, while promoting our national values, our rules-based democratic standards and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations," Ross said in a statement.

The government said its order, previously announced by President Donald Trump in August, "will combat China's malicious collection of personal data of U.S. citizens.

Some security experts have expressed concern that ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, may retain access to the information of the 100 million TikTok users in the United States, creating a security risk.
